How to: Get the Celebrity-Loved Smoky-Eyed Look

Tue, 29 January 2013 5:37PM

In beautyland, makeup trends come and go so fast they often end up looking like one big colourful blur. One minute it’s all about bright pink, a second later lips are suddenly orange and eyes awash in blue. It can be enough to make a girl give up trying to keep up, and reach for that tried-and-true makeup classic: the smoky eye.

And that, friends, is exactly what some celebrities have been doing of late.

Witness …

Marion Cotillard, at the SAGs this past weekend

Willa Holland (yes, Marissa’s little O.C sister!)

Teresa Palmer

Needless to say, it’s a makeup look that suits every face, on any occasion.

Sold? Then you’ve come to the right place, because below is a refresher in how to get this super-chic look ….

  • Start with a clean, moisturised face. Prep your lids with concealer or, if you have one, a lid primer.
  • Take a black or dark grey pencil and etch it along your upper lashline. Next, work on the lower lashline, dotting the pencil between your lash hairs, so as to create the look of more lashes, as opposed to a thick (and unflattering) line. Use a cotton bud or a smudger brush to soften out both lines.
  • Grab a dark grey – or even deep shade of blue – powder and, using a soft shadow brush, sweep colour over lid, working it through the crease and out into a soft winged effect. Two to try: Clinique Color Surge Stay Matte Eyeshadow in Slate, $33, department stores, and Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Navy, $44, selected department stores.
  • Next, dust a non-shimmery shade of buff over your browbone (make sure to use a different brush, so that you don’t deposit any dark pigment here).
  • Now it’s time for the shimmer. Grab a sparkly shade of champagne, gold or silver and ever-so-lightly whisk it over your smoky eye. You could also use your pinkie to press a little more into the inner corners, to add some lustre and lighten up the heaviness of the look a little.
  • To finish off your eyes, swipe on some black mascara: two coats up top, one below.
  • As for the rest of your face: wipe off any shadow fall-out; smooth on primer; use a foundation brush to flawlessly apply a medium-coverage cream foundation; swirl on a peachy blush; and, layer lips in a nude-hued lipstick.

Gorgeous work, Primpers!

At first I didn’t like the smokey eye look but it has grown on me since, I am loving Teresa’s look, the smokey is there but it is subtle.

I like the smoky eye, you can vamp it up or sweeten it down, so versatile.
