The Basic Makeup Products Every Woman Needs

Thu, 28 June 2012 9:00AM

I’m a makeup virgin and totally clueless when it comes to wearing the stuff. What are your top tips for a basic everyday look and the products that I could use?

Well, luckily, you’re in safe hands with us!

We’re going to take baby steps today, starting with the top hardworking products that we believe every girls needs at the ready.

The Base. Although we love foundation, most women tend to over apply the stuff. If you’ve got relatively good skin (meaning: naturally quite even and smooth with little to no blemishes or redness) then you can get away with wearing a tinted moisturiser throughout the day and then tackling problem areas, like dark circles or the odd spot, with a liquid concealer. Once you’ve got your base covered, you can go back and highlight the skin with a light dusting of a bronzing powder (we like: Rimmel Sunshimmer Maxi Bronzing Powder, $19.95, from pharmacies and supermarkets) focusing on the areas when the sun naturally kisses the skin, like the along the cheeks, the bridge of the nose and the temples.

If you’re new to tinted moisturiser, you can’t go wrong with Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin Protector SPF 15, $13.95, from supermarkets and pharmacies.

If you’re looking for a foundation, we swear by Mac Face and Body, $60, MAC Cosmetics, which boasts a water-based formula that blends into the skin in next to no time and feels totally weightless on.

Now, let’s break for a brief moment to gaze at Ms Rosie Huntington Whitely who has the no-makeup-looking makeup look in the bag.

The Eyes: A black or brown eye liner is a must, followed by a lengthening or volumising mascara. The thing with mascara is that it doesn’t last long, so in my opinion, it’s best to opt for a relatively cheap formula (you’d be amazed at what you can bag for $15) that you can afford to update regularly. We love Maybelline New York Great Lash Lots Of Lashes Mascara, $15.95, from pharmacies and supermarkets.

The Lips and Cheeks: If there was an award for the world’s best multi-tasking product it would hands down go to lip and cheek tints. Unlike glosses that can be sticky, lip and cheek crèmes are brilliantly buildable and leave the skin with a subtle dewy-glow that’s perfect for all your round. My vote goes to Becca Lip & Cheek Crème in Rosebud, $45Becca Cosmetics.

Hot tip: for a foolproof application, try warming the product on the pad of your fingertips first, or mix it with a hint of tinted moisturiser to help it glide on faster.

Hope that helps!

Aiming for the rosie look is very high :) definitely like her neck…
collette, just skip the mascara for a couple of days, give them poor hairs a break, or have you tried using a new mascara?

    LOL at Adrienne’s comments!

I wish I could wear a BB cream but the Garnier one broke me out so badly! It took months for it to recover!

She does have a rather thick neck…and small shoulders in comparison.

Thats a shame Coconal, I love the Ganier BB cream! I find though that it works best for really dry skin, as my skin just drinks it up during the day.
