Milan S/S ’13: Neon Lips Light up at Missoni & Moschino

Mon, 24 September 2012 11:25AM

When I fall for a lip colour, I get a little, actually quite a lot, obsessed and usually find it hard to move on. It’s not the best trait to have as a beauty writer, when you’re meant to continually test an array of shades. It’s also not ideal to find yourself in love with a limited-edition lippie. That’s just asking for heartache.

But so I did, about ten or so years ago (see, I told you I find it difficult to let go). It was a M.A.C Lipglass called Electron Pink, a fabulous hot pink warmed up with coral-orange undertones. The fact that I had heard Kylie Minogue was a fan was definitely one thing that attracted me to it. But the other factor was that, despite it looking really unwearably bright in the tube, one slick on the lips and, bam, I looked (don’t take this the wrong way) amazing. Happier and glowier and livelier. I could also build it up to a fluoro-like intensity when in the mood, and it always stayed on the right side of glamorous, never edging into garish territory.

Alas, I lost my last last tube of Electron Pink when out on the town in New York one night. While I like to think she found a good home and still gets out for a martini or two at Bungalow 8 every now and then, over the past decade, I’ve never stopped missing her.

Sad, I know.

But there’s a happy ending! Thanks to makeup artist Lucia Pieroni (she who created that fabulous fuchsia lip back at Giles) and Missoni. Check this out:

This is about as close to Electron Pink (in its full, layered-up glory) as I’ve seen. To achieve the intense effect, Lucia used a mix of M.A.C LipmixWhite, Orange and Pink ($25 each, available from the ‘Pro’ range, which you can buy at the Paddington and South Yarra stores) – and then finished it all off with Pigment in Bright Pink ($39, another Pro product). It’s out-there, I know, but you could easily use this mix as a pretty, subtle stain (well, as subtle as a neon hue can be).

The moral of the story? If you can no longer buy your favourite shade of lipstick or gloss, simply mix it up. All you need is an old gloss pot, or even a jar lid, a cuticle stick (for stirring) and a lip brush. And your perfect pout is mere seconds away.

If, however, that all sounds like hard work, may I suggest M.A.C’s Morange?

This cult orange lipstick is a regular on the runways and was most recently spotted on models at Moschino:

If you’ve worn Morange before, I won’t need to work hard to convince you to dust it off and swipe it on at once. If, however, you’ve yet to meet Ms Morange, or – shock, horror – even wear orange on your lips, get thee to a M.A.C counter immediately. Again, this is one of those buys that look a little scary in the tube… But on lips, whether worn as a light stain or layered up to its full force, it just lights up, illuminating the face and everything else with it. And while Moschino put on a bit of an overboard beauty show – falsies, white eyeliner, beehives, bouffants, all sorts of 60s-inspired accessories – Morange is actually most modern when worn with practically zip: a clean dewy face, and a flick of mascara.

What do you think, Primpers? Will you be trying neon lips this summer?

Do you ever mix up your own lip colour? If so, got any tips to share?

And have you worn Morange before?

I absolutely love everything about neon and always wear it on my nails, but when it comes to lips i dont. Only because im afraid of the looks ill get. If people wouldnt judge me then i definitely would. I love vibrant colours

Looks pretty cool to me women have been pushing the boundaries since Elizabeth I in the 15th century and her white face make-up. At least we’re not using anything toxic!

I dont really like the hair in the first picture. But the second look is divine. I find that all lipsticks look 100x better with a touch of clear gloss over it. The colours appear alot more vivid and it gets rid of fine lines in the lips

Not really my cup of tea, but the second pic looks a lot better than the first one.

Love, love, love. Looks wonderfully bright and summery.
On a random, unrelated note, does Cara’s nose look weird or is it just me?

I love bright lips and I love some of the great neon colours out there at the moment. I have never tried Morange, and it looks like it might just be a little too pure orange for my skin tone, but I’m currently having a love affair with the Rimmel Kate Moss lippy #12 which is a lovely bright orange with just enough of a pink undertone that I can wear it without looking sallow. I also have #20 which is a lovely fuchsia pink…gorgeous.

I still cant get passed the fact that this looks like Zinc to me, like what the cricketers wear on their lips.

I really like this lip colour although it really doesn’t suit the model in the first shot but the model in the second shot looks really hot, it suits her really well.

No I don’t like this. Not for normal everyday wear. It’s fine for the runway because the runway is a creative outlet but I wouldn’t go do my grocery shopping in neon lips.

Not brave enough for this shade at all, love the way it looks though!

Not a terribly big fan of neon I’m afraid…

The first model has such a scowl on her face, don’t like the look at all, love the lip colour though.
