The February Face (and why you need a Pressed Powder in your Life)

Fri, 1 February 2013 1:13PM

Lately I have been labouring under the illusion that today would be the first day of autumn. I’m stumped as to how I came to believe this. I mean, the seasons are one of the first things we learn in primary school. What’s more, I’m a February baby and have always relished having my birthday in the final summer month – it’s such a good excuse to stretch out the party season that bit more.

But this year I somehow simply forgot that fact. For the past few weeks I have been planning all sorts of autumnal stories to get cracking on for February. I’d even obviously convinced Hayley that summer was almost over, because she was also getting excited about this supposed seasonal change and all the beauty modifications it would mean (a richer body cream, a woodier scent, a deeper lip hue, etc). But then early this week, when we were brainstorming some post-summer post ideas, Hayley suddenly froze. “Oh no,” she cried. “Kat, I think autumn doesn’t actually begin until March…”

And indeed, Google told us it was so.

Total blonde moment, or what?

While my body is happy to have another month of summery fun ahead (cue more of my beloved St Tropez and all sorts of coconutty body concoctions), my face has decided to stick with my change of makeup plans. Because while I have loved looking all glowy-skinned and peachy-cheeked and bright-eyed lately, I have found myself warming to more wintery-look faces lately. Case in point:

This was the look at the Valentino show at the couture collections a little while back. It was technically a summer show, but Cara Delevingne’s complexion completely says autumn/winter for me. There’s the dusky-grey eyes and berry-stained lips for one. But it’s mostly about the velvety-matte skin texture, which Pat McGrath achieved by sweeping a veil of fine powder over her blush and contouring work.

The other face that’s front and centre on my makeup inspiration board right now is this one:

While I love the contrast between Kate Mara’s sharply black-defined eyes and pretty apricot blush, I’m most swoony over her perfectly powdered complexion.

Powder!, I hear you screech. I know, I know. The thought of it might make you reel in horror a little. And true, it does at first seem a tad outdated. I mean, we haven’t seen many pressed powders around the beauty traps of late, not since the days when they made us look instantly ten years older.

But there’s a new one on the makeup block that could just win you over. Because it has totally got me.

It’s CoverGirl + Olay Press Powder, $16.95, pharmacies and variety stores.

And it’s a goodie. While the puff is a little lame (swap it for a more velvety-like pad, or a brush), the formulation is fantastic. You get a sheer-to-medium coverage that is nice on its own, but which really comes into its own over a well-blended base, setting and perfecting your look. It’s also a dream to reapply, as it doesn’t do chalky or cakey. Thanks to the Olay component, conditioning ingredients make it comfy on the skin, and a subtle gold pearl pigment gives you a slightly diffused-looking, warm glow. For this reason, I’ve found it’s even lovely around the eyes – usually a no-go zone for me due to the fact that most powders tend to make lines look, well, linier. Overall it’s a soft-matte effect that makes you look instantly more polished.

And totally makeup-appropriate for the cooler months. Even, uh, if it’s only February…

Tell me, Primpers, are you ready for autumn?

More to the point, are you ready for the return of pressed powder?

Kat x

Even though I have dry skin and love a dewy look, I can really appreciate powder.

Although I prefer a loose powder, as usually I feel it’s less cakey.
Kryolan Silk Powder is super fine (it’s weightless!) and does a great job of setting foundation around the eyes without creating lines.
And I’ve heard great stuff about the Laura Mercier one.

Hehe, I thought you were all getting into Autumn a bit too quickly!! I was thinking – It’s only half way through Summer!

Wow the cover girl + olay powder sounds do great and its really affordable. Ive always loved my pressed powders and always reach for the before a lose powder. I guess I trust a pressed powder and feel I have more control as i apply it.

I am not ready for either. I love the summer and the beautifully illuminated skin that comes with it, but I will have to just suck it up when it does come along.

I have dry skin but now that it is summer (haha) I havent been able to get away without powder like I can for the rest of the year. Ive been using my dream matte but that powder takes a bit oof time to look nice (it looks way too matte but wears throughout the day to a nice finish) so Ive resorted to my other 2 covergirl pressed powders. Theyre not too bad and cover up my pores quite well. I do agree the puff is horrible. My mum uses the CG& olay one and the puff is a little better (It feels leathery on one side) but still pretty pathetic.

I normally use a loose translucent powder, but I might have to give this one a go!

I love my pressed powder! I use MAC skinfinish natural which I find really keeps the shine at bay and doesnt clog my pores :) I might have to give this Covergirl + Olay one a go because I have heard it is similar to MAC SFN.

Really want to try the Covergirl and Olay pressed powder, have been looking for one, as in summer I hate wearing foundation when its too hot.

I’ve always used pressed powder since my teens as I have oily skin and I hate the shine. I never really took to loose powder. I’ve heard that pressed powder can make you look older once you reach a certain age but I haven’t noticed this. As I still have oily skin at age 53, I still use powder to combat the shine. I just use a little less. I love the matte look. I’m going to try the Covergirl and Olay Pressed Powder as it sounds like a powder I’d like. I also love the price! :)

I am more than ready for Autumn! Bring it on I say :)
Is it just me, or does Cara look rather alien?
