Valentine’s Beauty Special 2013: Three New Lip Buys for the Perfect Pucker-Up

Can you smell the roses? That’s right, V-Day is just around the corner.
Ahh, Valentine’s Day. Despite all of the commercial hoo-ha, it’s one of my favourite dates on the calendar. And made a little more special for me this year, as it will be the first one I’ll be celebrating as a fiancé. All together now … Awwww.
Ahem. Enough with the sappy talk. But really and truly, there’s a certain something about the way a woman looks when she’s in love. On a beauty level, that is. There’s a little extra glow to skin. Eyes are just that much more sparkling. Hair seems to appear lustrous and healthy, despite sometimes perhaps looking a little, uh, dishevelled. Rosy cheeks. And, of course, luscious lips.
Something along the lines of the loved-up newlywed Blake Lively …
With this snap as inspiration, I had planned on slicking on a coat of red or pink lipstick for Valentine’s Day. Then, in the name of research, I asked my main squeeze for his thoughts on a layered-up bold lipstick. The verdict? I got a ‘depends on the occasion’ and ‘potentially messy’ and that, ultimately, it looks a little ‘high-maintenance.’ Which was news to me, considering I never think twice about sporting a bright pout. But alas, I’ll take his advice on board this V-Day and opt for something a little less complicated. And, I guess, kissable.
Here, some of the latest lip buys that not only fit the mould, but also take my fancy. I’m betting they will yours, too. And your Valentine’s …
First up, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine, $55, from department stores, a new lipstick-balm-gloss fusion sure to set hearts a-flutter. The sheer, yet creamy consistency paired with the richly-pigmented, eye-catching shades makes for an outstanding lip finish, while the sumptuous mango scent leaves you to feel like you’ve enjoyed sipping on a fruity cocktail concoction all afternoon.
My favourite shade is No. 12, Corail Incandescent, a buildable, coral-verging-on-red shade, the perfect pairing to a dewy complexion and a summery LBD. As for staying power, I got around five to six hours, and even then still had a soft, stain-like effect. Each of the colours (10 in total) are classified into four colour groups, ranging from soft neutrals to reds, hot pinks and rich purples. They’re available on the 10th February, just in time for the big night.
But if you’re partial to a more subtle lip look, may I recommend the new shades of Ere Perez Beautiful Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tint, $29.95 each, 02 80060912 …
Available in Lovely, a pigmented, yet sheer vibrant pink and Charm, they’re enriched with rosehip and beetroot extract and come with a mini-roller ball to evenly distribute the pigment for the perfect amount of just-kissed colour. In saying that, they are buildable depending on the intensity you are after, but dry down to a fresh and pretty stain-like finish no matter how much you apply. And as a side note, they also work beautifully on the cheeks to give a pretty and delicate flush. Tip: I would recommend gently dabbing the product on with your fingers for the cheeks as the colour settles quite quickly and otherwise layering too many coats can leave an uneven finish.
However, if you’re more of a no-fuss, clear balm or gloss kind of girl then a product like the new Dermaquest Skin Therapy Stem Cell 3D Lip Enhancer, $60, selected salons, could be for you:
It uses plant stem cell ingredients, which work to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hydrate and rejuvenate your lips while also enhancing your natural lip colour. While my lips are naturally on the larger side anyway, I did get that tingling feeling that made me feel like the product was going to work and they felt super-soft post-use. As a bonus, I got a few comments that my lips did look fuller, and also asking me what lipstick shade I had on, when in fact, I wasn’t wearing any colour at all. Winner.
Tell me, Primpers, what are your favourite lip products?
Which ones will you be wearing this Valentine’s Day? Got any special plans?
What do your loved ones think about rich red or pink lipstick?
