Video: Five of the Best – Beauty Editor-Approved Bronzers

Wed, 16 January 2013 8:26AM

Bronzer is my ‘desert island’ product. I can’t live without the gorgeous glow it kisses my skin with and, in all honesty, feel nude without it. That said, it’s hard to track down the holy grail of glow-enhancing powders. Navigating your way through the fields of bronzing options is almost as hard as deciding whether to watch Gossip Girl or Game of Thrones. An impossibility to say the least. So Primpers, today I’ve done the hard work for you and narrowed the list down to a simple few. Five to be exact. Here are my picks…

Bronzer #1: ByTerry Serum Terrybly Sunbooster, $148, Mecca Cosmetica

This super high-tech bronzer is far more than just a, well, bronzer. It works to stimulate the skin’s natural melanin production so your tan lasts well beyond the moment you take your makeup off, but differs from a DHA-containing fake tan. Instead this one uses Spectro-Light – a soft-focus agent that charges ions to reduce the blue tones in your skin that contribute to a dull complexion, while the other tones of the light spectrum – peach, rosy and amber – are enhanced to make your skin more radiant and golden. Phew. Confused yet? Me too.

Bronzer #2: Clinique Superbalanced Powder Bronzer, $65, department stores

This one is my pick for girls with oily skin. It’s hard to find a bronzer that mattifies oil without making you look dull, but this one does. It’s amazing!

Bronzer #3: Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Bronze Powder, $68, department stores,

A great option for anyone with pale skin, this softer toned bronzer is packed with antioxidants like green tea to help protect your skin against free radicals and slow the ageing process. Gorgeous, flawless and fabulous.

Bronzer #4: ELES Mineral Gemstone Finishing Powder, $101.50, ELES

A lovely peach-toned bronzer that’s mineral based, so ideal for anyone with sensitive skin. It also contains vitamin A, C and E for a little skincare kick as you wear it.

Bronzer #5: Nars Laguna Illuminator, $48, Mecca Cosmetica

The latest addition to the Nars Laguna family, this illuminating version of the cult classic, Laguna Bronzer, can be mixed with your foundation or worn alone for a seriously illuminated, bronzed look. Pair it with mascara, poppy-toned lipstick and fresh skin and you’re good to go.

Go on, share your bronzing favourites why don’t you…

Thanks Yas :) I’ve been scared of using a bronzer because I am so pale. Will check out the Elizabeth Arden one next time I’m around a beauty counter!

I love all bronzers, purely for how they make me feel and look. Kissed by the fake sun.

I like using just a touch of bronzer for that healthy glow, some great brands.

I’m such a pasty white girl, so all these are lost on me!

I’m so pale I really can’t use a bronzer. I use a powder instead in a slightly darker shade than my natural skin tone.

I have quite olive skin, so bronzer and I go way back, but in my late teens I had chronic bronzer-overuse. I look at photos and cringe. About two years ago I purchased NARS Laguna bronzer, and while I like the colour (great for night use!), I really hate ‘shimery’ illuminating bronzers and even this has a golden tone to it. Does Primped have any recommendations for bronzers that have no shimmer in them?

Hi Natalie. Haha, I think we all have evidence of bronzer crimes in our old photo albums. I wrote about matte bronzer on Friday, so check this out: http://primped.ninemsn.com.au/blogs/the-daily-gloss/matte-vs-shimmer-bronzer-kate-mara-kate-upton-take-sides … another matte bronzing powder I love is by Too Faced, you can buy it at kitcosmetics.com.au Kat x

I’ve never worn bronzer before, I’ve always wanted to but I’m so pale I think it would look strange if just my face was bronzed haha

I also have dodgy flat, over bronzed photo fails. So I love sheer bronzers lthat seem to melt into skin like Bare Minerals in warmth & Arbonne’s bronzer. Really want to try Smashbox Hydrating perfect Bronzer too. The Body Shop Liquid Honey Bronze is my fav liquid bronzer so sheer and delicious.

I do like bronzers and illuminators. Sometimes its just a nice touch to skin, something with a bit of shimmer can look good as well.
