Great Skin. A Day in the Life …

Fri, 1 February 2013 10:12AM

While time may be a man-made thing, there’s no denying your body does remarkable things throughout a 24-hour period. During the day, when you’re racing around and getting all your work done, your body is digesting the food you eat, fuelling your brain so you can do your job, and protecting you from doing totally crazy things like stepping in front of moving cars or walking into walls. Essentially, your body is keeping you alive.

But that’s tough, challenging, exhausting work. No wonder you come home at night and plonk down for some much needed R&R. You’re conditioned this way. In the daylight hours you work; in the moonlight hours you rest. Unless of course you’re a shift worker, but that’s a different blog entirely. So come night time, your body is ready to repair, restore and rejuvenate itself from the previous 12 hours.

With this in mind, it’s not all that surprising to hear that your skin works in exactly the same way. During the day your complexion is blitzing free radicals firing at it via pollution, UV rays, smoking etc. to keep you looking, well, human. While at night, it slips into repair mode to try and recover from a busy day at work. Makes sense, right?

Clearly, then, it would also make sense that the needs of your skin are different during the day to what they are at night. Think of it like this: during the day you wear certain clothes to fulfil your tasks as efficiently (and fashionably) as possible. But at night, you slip into something far more comfortable, like trackies, or PJs, or nothing. Gasp! The same principle applies to your skincare.

During the day you need to drape your skin in antioxidants like vitamin C to help fight free radicals even more effectively. You also need to arm it with accessories to help strengthen, lift and firm so that your skin remains strong and robust. Sunscreen is also another must (particularly the new SPF50+ variety) – it’s the ultimate fashion piece when it comes to your complexion.

At night, however, the needs of your skin are totally different. No longer does it need armour or energy, instead it requires tools to help the rejuvenation process in the form of retinoids (a vitamin A derivative) and AHAs to help encourage collagen production and cellular turnover. It also needs moisture, lots and lots of moisture to help plump and add volume to the skin so that you wake up looking refreshed and, hopefully, not a day older than you did yesterday.

So, now that’s sorted, let’s look at some product picks. Here are some great AM/PM options…

1. Philosophy Full of Promise A.M/P.M Serum, $95, 1800 812 663
This clever dual ended serum provides your skin with everything it needs for both the day and night. The AM end has rye seed extract to help lift the skin and kigelia extract to improve skin firmness and elasticity, while the PM end has the benefit of a retinoid to help restore volume in the skin.

2. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $59, 1300 651 991
Working to repair the damage caused to your skin during the day, this paraben-free formula nourishes, rejuvenates and soothes tired skin overnight.

3. Origins Night Health Bedtime Face Cream, $86, Mecca
With Dr. Weil’s all-natural blend of chamomile, lavender and mandarin, you can rest easy knowing that your skin is getting everything it needs to look radiant come morning. It smells amazing and melts into your skin, making your night time ritual all the more pleasurable.

4. Olay Regenerist Revitalising Lotion with UV, $32.49, 1800 028 280
Having an in-built sunscreen is always a bonus for day creams as it’s one step you no longer have to do. This SPF 15+ also contains Olay’s exclusive amino-peptide complex to help protect your skin throughout the day. Other benefits include amazing hydration and light diffusers to give your complexion an instant glow.

So tell me Primpers…

I love Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate & their eye cream from the same range – I always use a light treatment serum under moisturiser by day an an oil under night cream by night

I use coconut oil once that’s absorbed, i put on a nice big thick slathering high potency vitamin e (+ Q10, vitamin A&C it says on the tube). I do this bout an hour before bed, then right before bed, I use my favourite SKII or Bliss eye cream.

The vitamin E, It’s good stuff check it out, it’s about $15 https://www.duit.com.au/p-15-skin-renewal-e.aspx?reloaded=true

Day is suncream (cetaphil UVA/UBA Defence 50+) then one of my many moisturisers, if make is called for next is a primer base then the make up. If find since using the VitE + coconut oil, I need less for the day, but maybe it’s just this time of year.

I’m definitely going to have to try the Kiehls!

  • Posted by: lovefashionangel Master Fan // Fri, 1 February 2013 05:36pm

Yep! I sure do. I just stick to a basic moisturiser with spf for daytime, but for nighttime I go for the more thicker and fancier creams. But I stick to the same cleansers and toners.

Yes! I do! I never knew if it was the okay thing to do until now haha.

In the AM I cleanse, tone, moisturise with an SPF 30+ moisturiser (QV), then makeup.

In the PM I cleanse, exfoliate (2-3 times a week), tone and miosturise with Rosehip Oil.

Yes the products I use at night are slightly different to my day products, my morning cleanse is usually quite light and I use a moisturiser with SPF.
My night cleanse is usually deeper and I use a heavier moisturiser without SPF

I would love to try Kiehl’s Midnight recovery. At the moment I’ve been using MAC Lightful Ultramoisture creme at night time and a little bit of Embryolisse Lait Creme concentre.

I do my skincare routine (cleanse, tone, moisturise) etc religiously day and night. I would really love to try the Kiehls and Origins products, they are right up my alley, but they are a little pricey.

I love Philosophy products, but live on a Olay budget! At night I double cleanse and apply my Grown serum and night moisturiser, during the day I cleanse, spritz with a hydrating mist then moisturise/ BB cream my way into the day :)

  • Posted by: anitas.artistry Master Fan // Mon, 11 February 2013 03:08pm

My day and night routine is basically the same, except I swap my sunscreen/moisturiser for a night cream.

  • Posted by: Britty1 Master Fan // Thu, 14 February 2013 04:10pm

yes, I’ve basically always used a different routine day and night. When I used estee lauder I used the pore minimising serum and the day wear and a hydration eye cream, then at night i’d use the ANR eye cream and serum instead. It made me used to doing two different routines and now I continue that with which ever skin care regime I am using (which I change at the end of each)
