NYE 2012: Beauty Countdown – Perfect Skin
Wed, 26 December 2012 10:00AM
There’s nothing quite like looking back on your New Year’s Eve photos and admiring skin that’s all gleaming, glowing, shimmery and healthy. Especially in the photos between, oh, 6 and 7pm when you’re still at your sobre best. Here, I breakdown the day-by-day duties to get the best skin you’ve ever had by NYE – even when the clock strikes midnight. Hooray!
5 DAYS TO GO …
In around a week’s time you’ll be shimmying into your sequinned frock and dazzling the crowds with your dance moves and all-round glow. So, you have six days to prep your skin for the biggest night of the year. Today, it’s time to vow off alcohol until NYE and swear you’ll drink around two litres of water a day to ensure your complexion is hydrated, plumped up and ready to roll come Monday night. Task one: done!
4 DAYS TO GO …
Before you kick off your skincare bootcamp you need to ensure your complexion is the cleanest it’s ever been. My tip: use a Clarisonic to gently clean and buff the skin’s surface, prepping it for the days ahead. Don’t have one? No worries. Do a gentle double-cleanse (that’s cleaning it twice in quick succession) to start to clear away any dirt, oil and grime that has built up over the Christmas period. During the next few days it’s imperative you cleanse your skin in the morning and night, always removing your makeup and following up with a gentle toner to help your serum and moisturiser penetrate deeper into the skin’s surface.
3 DAYS TO GO …
Skin looking a little dull? That’s probably due to a number of factors including lack of sleep, dead-skin build-up (mmm, yummy), dehydration and exposure to the elements. Today is the day you’re going to scrub it all away. Dig into your little box of beauty goodies and pull out one of two options depending on your skin type. If you have oily skin and love the feeling of exfoliating beads sloughing dead skin away, use a mechanical exfoliant and gently massage in circular motions to get rid of any grime. For sensitive-skinned types, try a gentle chemical exfoliant that uses fruit-based acids to eat all those dead skin cells right up. See how you go with one exfoliating session between now and New Year’s Eve; you might want to do another gentle round on Sunday as well.
Mechanical/grainy exfoliants I like: Burt’s Bees Peach and Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub, $24.95, Burt’s Bees; Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub, $51, 1800 659 118
2 DAYS TO GO …
By now your skin should be super-clean, your water intake should be showing noticeable improvements in your complexion, and all that dullness should be gone. Now, it’s time to pack in as much moisture as possible. Cue a hydrating mask. Moisturising masks are suitable for all skin types that are suffering dehydration. Even oily skins get dry, which sounds odd but is most certainly true. Take a closer look at your skin under some bright lights and look for fine lines, dry patches and any inconsistencies with your skin tone. All these suggest that your skin is in need of some moisture. Apply the mask to clean, dry skin and leave for as long as the treatment suggests.
Some options I like: SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque, $113.90, 1800 242 011; Kora Hydrating Mask, $49.95, David Jones
1 DAY TO GO …
You are what you eat, Primpers, so today you need to up your antioxidants. Snack on antioxidant-rich foods like leafy greens and berries to pack your skin with as much goodness as possible. While you’re there, you should also apply your antioxidants topically, using a botanical-packed serum beneath your regular moisturiser. This helps to protect your skin against ageing free radicals. While you can’t expect miracles overnight, it’s worth investing in a good serum to use daily anyway. The good news is that many serums also contain essential vitamins and peptides as well, which help reduce the appearance of fine lines and nourish your skin from deep below the surface.
Some options to consider: Olay Regenerist Daily Revitalising Serum, $32.49, from pharmacies; Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex, $105, department stores
THIS IS IT! Today you can pat yourself on the back and enjoy the fruits of your good skin labour. Keep up your water intake throughout the day (thank me in the morning) and if you have any skin redness or irritation, calm it by popping a soothing mask in the fridge before slathering it on your face. You could do another moisture mask if you wanted to, but generally speaking today is a day to relax and unwind. Pop open the bubbly and enjoy your special night. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Tell me Primpers, what plans do you have to bring in 2013?
