Salma Hayek. Chicer than Ever.

Years ago, I received two separate pieces of advice that I have only recently begun to appreciate. The first was from a makeup artist who juggled a full-time career with two small boys. “How do you do it?” I asked her. “Tupperware,” she laughed. “It will get you through anything.”

Fast-forward to now and here I am with two small boys myself. As well as a house full of storage solutions (I’m sure I single-handedly keep Howard’s Storage World afloat). And whenever people ask me, “How do you do it?” I say, “I’m just a little bit organised.”

The other nugget of golden advice was from a fellow beauty editor. She’s about ten years older than I am. Back in the day, I was quite green and very boho. I could air-dry my hair, slap on some illuminiser, pinch my cheeks and go. Pretty much. She, however, was ultra-groomed. “How do you do it?” I asked her. I didn’t mean how did she actually apply her foundation so flawlessly or wave her hair so immaculately – of course, I had written such stories myself. What I meant was, how did she have the energy to do it so well and so often.

“I have no choice,” she shrugged. “You’ll see, Kat. In another ten years or so, you’ll come to realise that ageing well is all about being groomed.”

Those wise beauty words came back to me when I spotted this photo of 44-year-old Salma Hayek:

Di. Vine. The velvety skin. Shiny, well conditioned hair. Supple, smooth lips. Perfectly defined lashes under a set of well-groomed brows. Tick, tick, tickety tick!

Of course, when you’re married to a French squillionaire who owns a fashion empire, you would have the lifestyle that allows you to be groomed. You know, the on-call makeup artist, the dial-a-manicurist, the weekly hair appointment…

Ritzy life notwithstanding, there are some nifty tips we can take from Ms Hayek. They would be:

  • To make your foundation look this flawless, use a foundation brush. Shiseido Perfect Foundation Brush, $49, from department stores, stipples and blends base amazingly well, and does so in next to no time.
  • As Salma shows, long hair doesn’t have a cut-off date. More women are wearing their hair longer for … longer. The key: keeping it in top-top condition with regular treatments, and smoothing balms and serums worked throughout hair before styling it.
  • We all know that curled lashes open up the face beautifully. This becomes even more important as we age, when eyes look a little less bright and bushy-tailed as they once were. Try this eye-opening trick: After using a lash curler and mascara, take a spoolie brush (you know, the ones that look like a mascara wand) and, before the mascara dries, work it through lashes to space hairs evenly apart, and position them skywards.
  • To get Salma-like skin, regular facials are helpful. But if the budget doesn’t allow for it, make like Salma and commit to spending ten minutes each night carefully cleansing your face. Apparently Salma cleanses so thoroughly, that she doesn’t cleanse again the morning, when all she does is splash on water (to supposedly re-activate her night cream) and apply sunscreen. Interesting concept if layering a million super-active skincare products isn’t working for you.

And simplifying your skincare routine, well, that would mean less need for all those stores boxes, right?

    She’s gorgeous!

I think those two tips are fantastic…short and succint.

I know I always feel better when I’m groomed, but there is always a time and a place for everything. Not much sense in being overly groomed for the beach. :P

The only thing wrong with that picture is the insanely light undereye concealer… but her skin is amazing!

Salma is ageing well, she looks gorgeous. I hope I’m ageing well too, at 42, I know my lines are getting deeper and more in quantity but I have put a lot of time and effort into my skin, hopefully this will show in another 10 years or so.
