Sweet Treats! The Best Sugary Beauty Buys

Wed, 21 November 2012 3:22PM

Candy. Lolly. Sweetie. Taffy. Pop. I don’t judge. I love a sucrose fix by any spankin’ name you want to bestow upon it.

Sugar is my middle name – which makes it kinda creepy and Southern sounding on my passport – so in the quest to keep up the addiction in a healthier form, I have uncovered a loophole in my lolly lovin’ life.

It’s sugar beauty, Primpettes, and here are a few reasons you should dip into it. Sweet!

Sugar is old-school: It’s been used since before the invention of the (Wagon) wheel. For centuries sugar has been called on as a wonderful exfoliant and in ancient Rome it was lathered on lips and other dry parts of the body to draw moisture into the area. See, it’s actually as hydrating as it is exfoliating so there are plenty of products now that cleanse and moisturise consecutively, thanks to their sugar component. These days, adapted sugar molecules in the form of glycolic acid and lactic acid (milk sugar) have revolutionised skin smoothing products since the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Sugar is sweet (on the skin): Sugar is gentler on the skin than many physical exfoliants, making it a perfect ingredient for facial scrubs and those with sensitive skin. When dissolved in water, sugar creates a viscous liquid that holds hydration in skin for longer, so it’s also has powerful plumping and smoothing properties.

Sugar is slimming: Rather than adding kilos, a good sugar body scrub can buff them off by stimulating the skin and getting the circulation going, leaving your summer silhouette a little more svelte.

Sugar can be one slippery sucker: If you’re exfoliating with a sugar-based product, make sure your skin is damp – but not dripping wet. Sugar dissolves in water so it’s best applied and worked into skin that isn’t too slippery.

Here’s some sugary treats to try – guilt-free!

  • Burt’s Bees Honey & Shea Sugar Scrub, $29.95, David Jones
  • Jane Iredale Sugar & Butter Lip Duo, $54, Adore Beauty
  • Endota Fig n’ Sugar Cleanser, $38.50, Adore Beauty
  • Sanctuary Spa Hot Sugar Scrub, $20, Priceline
  • MOR Marshmallow Sugar Crystal Body Scrub, $39.95, MOR Cosmetics
  • Parissa 2-in-1 Roll-On Body Sugar, $19.99, Priceline

Are you tempted to try these Primpettes?

Anyone got a jelly bean please?

Love this! I used the Lush Popcorn Lip Scrub last night which is made from castor sugar. It worked so well on my dry lips, and I found out later that the product is actually edible. Not that I ate it… hehe

This is tres funny ECB. My other favourite product whose main ingredients is sugar is the Lush Mint Chocolate lip scrub. I sometimes want to lick all its sugary goodness from that pot.

Mor marshmallow makes me think of Katy Perry on a pink cloud for some reason, it might be because when I think of marshmallow I then think of fairy floss, then I think of pink clouds. Anyway……I’m dying to try it, the scrub that is, not sitting on a pink cloud!

I love Lush’s Sweet Lips sugar scrub, it’s too yummy though, with a sweet vanilla flavour! Reminds me of when mum used to beat butter, sugar and vanilla together when she was making a cake, and I would get to lick the beaters!
