Try Now: A Big Beauty Night In

Sun, 2 December 2012 4:00PM

One thing I remember about beauty from my teenage years: it’s never only just about the makeup.

Beauty isn’t simply about how well you apply your lipstick, or if your eyeshadow matches your eye colour. It’s also about taking care of yourself. And sometimes we just need a little pampering to make ourselves look and feel better.

As we get older, we tend to forget about the importance of self-pampering and see it as a luxury some of us just can’t afford (at least not until our next payday).

But another thing I also remember from back in the day: the articles in my Dolly magazines about how to have a pampering night-in. Obviously, you were too young to go out and do anything else. But that’s beside my point…

So my advice to you, lovely Primpers, is to re-visit your teenagehood: take out those face masks, pop out the hair treatments, grab that foot scrub – and go nuts!

Throw on some lady tunes – my preference is Lana Del Rey, but if you want to go the full swing and belt out a bit of Shania Twain’s ‘Man! I Feel like a Woman’ – well, I say whatever floats your boat!

Now, grab a nice glass of wine (or Milo) and start your night of all-about-you.

For a smooth-flowing session, it’s best to do things in order of convenience. So start by taking all your make up off, and give your face a good cleanse with something gentle. I’ve been using Biore Skin Preservation Clean Things Up Nourishing Gel Cleanser, $16.99, from pharmacies. It’s very soft on the skin, it’s hypo-allergenic, and it doesn’t disturb your skin’s natural moisture balance. My face always feels so supple after I use it, it’s amaze.

Now, onto your face mask. There are many options to choose from; heated, cucumber, exfoliating, soothing, nourishing… I’ve gone for Apivita Express Beauty with Cereals Mask, $7.99, Adore Beauty. Because I have dry skin, this one nourishes and hydrates using valuable vitamins from wheat germ oil, oat and rice extracts, so it only enhances my skin’s pampered new softness.

If your hair is yelling out for some TLC, now is the time to lavish on a treatment, because you’ll save time by having two products on the go at once. Work your hair mask or oil through your lengths, leave it to do its thing for ten minutes, then jump into the shower (or bath if you’re feeling extra classy). Wipe the mask off with a gentle wet cloth in the warm water and shampoo out your hair treatment.

While I’m in the shower, I often like to do a full-body scrub-down – and this pamper night would be the perfect occasion for it, no? One that I cannot go past is Sportsgirl Scrub Up Exfoliating Body Scrub, $9.95, from Sportsgirl stores. It’s amazingly yummy-smelling, and works wonderfully to leave you feeling smooth and soft all over.

Okay, once you’ve rinsed off, hop out of your shower or bath. This is the best time to exfoliate your feet, because the heat of the water has softened the skin. Now I wear terrible shoes, so my feet are a bit rough around the edges (quite literally), so I go at my tootsies with one of those foot files. With a little time and elbow grease, feet are left feeling baby-soft.

Now, let’s leave our feet and return to the face, shall we? While your pores are still a little open, slather on moisturiser or oil for easier absorption. My pick: I’ve just started using Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Napoleon Complex Skin Renewal Serum, $79, 02 8595 0911, with its burst of vitamins, berry extracts, and good, happy stuff in general.

Next, spend some time also coating your whole body in a rich moisturiser. I’m talking feet/legs/arms/hands/booty/stomach/shoulders/back (if you can). Try Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula All Over Body Firming Lotion, $7.40, from pharmacies.

Lastly, you may want to end your pampering night with a movie, while wearing your fluffy dressing gown and giving yourself a lovely mani and pedi just to decorate your newly rejuvenated body.

Good for you, I say! You’ve earned it, and your body will thank you for it, too.

So, fellow Primpers, have I inspired you to spoil yourself?

What are you top tips and best buys when it comes to pampering?

And what’s on your pamper night playlist? Shania? Fess up!

Great article! I actually had my beauty night yesterday since it was a quiet saturday night. I’ve been using the Beauty diary masks I bought in Singapore and Malaysia.

I love nothing more than putting a face mask on my skin and listening to some music (also love lana del rey, maybe some spice girls as well!) and reading a good book on a sunday night.

Oh i wish i was into beauty when i was a teen. I’ll be encouraging my daughter to take care of her skin when she grows up.
You’ve definately inspired me to amp up my pampering routine. I find Sunday nights are best. I use a skin vitals mask or use the avene soothing mask. Followed by a nice layer of rose hip oil. Skin always feels great after.

I tend to do a pampering weekend as I’m too slack to do all that in one night, plus I get two nights of pampered goodness instead of one haha
I wouldn’t put music on, but if I did it would probably be the killers.
Ending the night with a movie like the notebook, the vow or the lucky one I think! Or even the proposal for some Ryan Reynolds peeving haha

I normally listen to one of the music channels on Fox when having a pamper night.
Generally I love Clarins exfoliating wash, Dermalogica clay mask, Clarins moisture mask and then ANR. For my hair I use Moroccanoil moisture mask and PPS leave-in conditioner. I just recently bought a Palmers mask which was very reasonably priced, so I cant wait to try that.

I love the Apivita range of masks. Sometimes there is nothing better than a bit of pampering at home.

I love having a good ol’ pamper session! Sometimes if I’m going out that night I’ll take the day to just relax and rejuvenate, scrub, shave, buff, polish, cleanse, treat, the whole shebang! Lovely article!

This has just inspired me to do some pampering tonight!
I like using the good old fashioned eggwhite mask and adding some rolled oats and honey. I tend to prefer slathering some Burts Bees Coconut foot creme onto my heels then adding some cotton socks last thing at night so it can do it’s thing while Im asleep.

im not really in to the DIY pampering stuff, its just not the same, i prefer to put $25 a week away of my pay then once a month treat myself to a facial. Its the cost of a weekly magazine, latte and few packets of gum – sop affordable when you think about it!!

Nothing beats a nice soak in the tub, a pamper facial, and giving my self the works. Hair removal, cleansing, exfoliating, self tan lotion, manicure and pedicure, these all make me feel good and would be on my pamper night playlist.

This sounds like such a fabulous idea. Pamper, pamper and more pampering.
