Vitamins. AKA the Easy, Effective Way to Get Shiny Hair, Radiant Skin & Strong Nails

Recently I completed a cracking three-day cleanse that consisted of only liquid – albeit delicious, vitamin and mineral packed liquid – but alas, Only. Liquid. It was all very Miranda.

Although I will stop short at claiming that chewing is over-rated (Hawaiian pizza is extremely messy to drink) and I will now be ditching all my forks for straws, I do have to admit that the vitality and vigour I felt the morning after I’d finished the cleanse caught me by surprise. I almost choked on my breakfast McMuffin!

Seriously, there is a lot to be said for rebooting your system; eliminating crap and coffee, nixing night-time snacks and naughty indulgences, and replacing them with 100% of the minerals, vitamins and nutrients your body needs – as opposed to the rubbish it craves.

The results were a skip in my step (tough one in heels, lemme tell you) and I kid you not, there was a smoothness of skin I have not seen since my 20s. My eyes were, well, pretty free of lines and the lids held no toxicity that can cause them to appear heavy and hooded. I had a clear complexion and my tummy was calm and free of any digestive distress.

Who knew that what you put in your body – or didn’t for that matter – could have such an impact on the outside?

Well, I did. As I am a big fat fan of clean living and exercise – with regular indulgences and ‘day-off’ just as favoured – but I am so busy banging on about beauty products, I’ve been lax in bringing to you the benefits of beauty from the inside, out.

Since completing the cleanse reacquainting myself with the workings of my teeth, I am intent on making internal changes for maximum external impact. Woman can’t live on liquid alone, but she can do her darnedest to recreate its benefits, right?

So if cleanses aren’t your bag, at least arm yourself with some of these tiny but mighty vitamins. Chewing optional.

  • If you are falling asleep in your bowl of corn flakes, you could be low in B-Complex vitamins. Up these and you will experience an increase in vitality almost immediately – especially if your diet is packed with freshness. Stodgy carbohydrates can be extremely taxing on the digestive system, and therefore, you. Co-enzyme Q10 is also a great one for lazy bodies and keep the magnesium and iron in check too. The latter (found in red meat and green vegetables) is a big booster of energy.
  • If your hair is flat-out, um, flat, look for zinc, silica and amino acid-packed vitamin pills.
  • Ageing starts on the inside well before it becomes visible on the outside.     Great advice, but might want to recommend talking to health professionals first as overdosing or taking vitamins you are not deficient in can lead to some side effects. Or so I’ve been told :)

    Good advice for thought ecb… I’ve been wondering about the Co-enzyme Q10.

    I take Herbs of Gold 3-6-9 (www.herbsofgold.com.au/products/product/1551) and swisse hair-skin-nails.

    I’ve found talking to so-called health profesionals useless as every single one I have ever tried talking to just tries to sell me more than what I was after or charges a bomb just for a consult. Educate yourself I say!!

    I don’t take vitamins for my skin as such. But I do like to take a Womens multi. I notice I’m more susceptible to illness or a general “run down” kind of feeling when I don’t take them. I also take Magnesium as recommended by my physiotherapist (I get RSI) and Omega 3s for heart health.

    I absolutely swear by Suisse hair skin and nails, the liquid one! It makes my nails so thick and healthy and my skin really glowy!

    I’m a firm believer in taking a general multivitamin. If the diet is good but soils are poor, we may not be getting all the micro-nutrients the body needs. I’d also add that a pro-biotic works wonders. Take a handful at the first sign of a cold or infection. You may not need to visit the doctor after all.

    Great tips, I have been taking a multivitamin every day, together with Vit D supplements and iron tablets (as recommended by my doctor after a blood test), and I can attest to feeling a bit better than before I started.

    I have been meaning to start taking probiotics but I keep forgetting. :P

    Actually it doesnt matter if your vitimin intake is over the RDI, but it does matter if your body has too many minerals, then you will definatley feels the bad effects this can cause.

    I want to try a Biotin supplement or Hair Nails Skin supplement without Iron. I notice the Swisse one has iron in it, and unless you are pregnant or have anemia– you should NOT be taking extra iron. Also B12 is not water soluble and your body will store vitamin B12 for years in the liver. Too much B12 can be toxic.

    I dont believe in just picking and choosing what to take, unless recommended by your GP, as you can do a lot more harm than damage, and waste your money at the same time! Nothing ever replaces a healthy lifestyle!

    I take a multi vitamin, and as I am low in iron and Vit D, I take those as well – I have blood tests taken every 3 months, to test my levels are ok, and so far, the tables seem to be working.

    I once heard that vitamin C tablets keep away colds and now I take them daily. I know this hasn’t been scientifically proven but placebo effect or not, it seems to be working for me!

    I don’t take vitamins…I think I read somewhere that your body doesn’t absorb the vitamins that you take. That most of it was actually excreted by your body?
